Australia day and missing baggage

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

No sooner had Sam and Marissa flown out for a brief return to NZ than Bear & Emily arrived in Sydney. This is actually a correct statement: Bear & Emily arrived, their bags did not – they were left behind in Heathrow – doh! But regardless of possessions, it was great to see them after all these months! :-)

...Bear & EmilyHaving given them 36 hours to adjust we then headed to watch the Dark Knight at the outdoor cinema complete with real bats flying overhead! Emily lasted until after the first scene, Karen a little longer and myself for more than 75% of the film – but sure enough we all fell asleep and left the Bear to wake us after the film! We started the weekend at the cricket then spent the rest of the weekend eating, drinking, sunbathing and bbq’in before they left for Melbourne the Sunday evening – boo :-(

for AdamMonday 26th Jan was Australia Day. Some call it Invasion day! We joined in the activities and first watched the ferry boat racing in Circular Quay, wandered through a classic car show (Adam would have been in heaven!) followed by live bands in Hyde park in the afternoon. The plan was then to catch the other bands in the Rocks/Darling Harbour before the 9pm firework display – however – the rain came about 6 and dampened our spirits :-(

But on the back of losing Bear & Emily to Melbourne we now have had the good news that Sam has a confirmed date for moving to Sydney, so Sam & Marissa will be back the end of Feb, Bruce’y-boy should be back from Vegas soon (hope he paid for his return flight before hitting Vegas!) and Ruth back from NZ too – so hopefully, fingers crossed, we can all go sea fishing ASAP as I am mad for some sea fishing action!!!!

erm? First thing we saw in NSW Art GalleryGiven we are both now not working, we spent our first day off by visiting the NSW Art Gallery and was quite shocked by the first exhibit – trust me, we didn’t do it! We *think* its meant to be like that! The best exhibition was the photo’s about “Black Australia” though some images were aimed at provoking a response and a certin exhibit with a dialogue was just plain arsey!

PS: For the sharp-eyed reader, well spotted, for the not so sharp check out the new header – it’s now on rotation for several images we have selected from the trip so far…

Sam & Marissa Weekend

Sam & MarissaA few days after the family left Sam & Marissa arrived. It was great to see Sammy and eventually meet Marissa. With the Sydney festival in full swing, we decided to go along to the Jazz night on Saturday, taking with us our esky (or cool box) and picnic. We are starting to get into the Oz way of life and  what a great way to spend the afternoon / evening.

The jazz night was in Hyde Park in the centre of town. We worked our way through the gathering crowds, found a spot, laid out our bed sheet (need to get a blanket!) and made ourselves comfy, cracking open the vino and some nibbles. I have to say I’m pleased I took the bed sheet as it marked out a large territory for us, which was good as Sian seemed to have got in rent a crowd under the pretence of friends!

The night turned out to be very enjoyable, the music was ok, but after mucho vino everyone was up dancing by the end of the night, regardless of whether the music was good or not! Realising we had maybe drank a bit too much wine, after the event we headed back to the flat, where the wine definitely caught up with Sam who didn’t quite realise that the ground below the balcony was in fact our downstairs neighbour’s garden! No harm done, I was quick to get the watering can out and wash away any evidence.

With Sam & Marissa leaving today, we have a few hours until Bear & Emily arrive – yippeeee!

Moving In, Manly and Goodbye’s

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

hmm, we seem to have accumulated alot of stuff!Being travellers for the last 4 months you would have thought moving into our “proper” flat in Surry Hills would have been easy. As you can see from the picture we seem to have accumulated quite a bit of stuff over the last few weeks from food to a boogie board and golf clubs! The move went well, Dan being at work, Peter and me decided to book a station wagon (an estate taxi!) rather than saving the pennies and using the bus. When we had everything piled up outside I was worried that we would need a bus to fit everything in!

view from the downstairs balcony 20090113-124632 The lights we bought in Bangkok go perfectly!

So we are now in our flat and somewhere we can stay for more than 3 weeks – for the first time in 4.5 months I have been able to put stuff away and put my  ruck sack under the bed. The flat is very ‘Darren’ and is everything we wanted in terms of location, style, size. We’re in the heard of all the pubs / cafes / bistro’s in Surry Hills (bit like Jesmond / Gosforth) and only a 20 minute walk into the city centre. On the downside we aren’t as close to the beach however it’s probably a good thing to prevent me from getting skin cancer!

Kangaroo pastiesTo celebrate moving in, we drank the sparkling red wine we bought up at the Hunter Valley accompanied by Kangaroo Wellington, on recommendation from the guy who sold us the wine. Kangaroo is really similar to beef yet extremely lean and low in fat. You can’t seem to buy one big Kangaroo fillet (like Beef) hence why we ended up with Kangaroo pasties rather than Kangaroo Wellington – you can take the girl away from Greggs but you can’t take Greggs away from the girl! A true winner I reckon!

20090109-151822 Just another one..... Manly Beach

Before the family left we had a day trip to Manly beach, a 20 minute ferry ride from Sydney. A great way to see the harbour from a different perspective and of course Manly which is a great seaside suburb of Sydney. Barbara & Pete left last Sunday and Peter the following morning – it was so good to see them and as ever sad to see them go.

New Years Eve 08/09

20090101-002054Starting off with dinner in Surry Hills, we met up with Chris, Ruth and some of Chris’ mates from Liverpool. Mark and Nick were absolutely hilarious, we had our own stand up comedians and we all laughed so much that we had sore jaws! After food we headed down to Circular Quays with our secret grog (rum & coke), cleaverly disguised in coke bottles and just to be safe hidden down the guys’ trousers; to our view of the harbour.

The fireworks were amazing and the view we had was fantastic. After fighting our way through the crowds we managed to jump on a bus back to Bondi and finished the evening with a few drinks back at the unit. Welcome 2009.

Hunter Valley

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

To maximise our time with the family, between Xmas and New Year, we all headed up to the Hunter Valley, a renowned wine region in New South Wales famous for its Semillon and Shiraz wines. Not done this sort of thing before we were all looking forward to a few days of wine tasting and even more so knowing we had a dedicated driver in Peter, who doesn’t like wine – brilliant!

We arrived a little later than expected, due to being stuck for 2 hours trying to get out of Sydney, however arrived in time to visit one winery, which was still open – just.  After tasting the wine portfolio of Tintilla (and realising that this was a great way to get drunk for free, if you should so wish!) we opted for their lovely sparkling red, sold to us by the guy it was named after and who said its perfect with kangaroo wellington!

That evening, to keep things fair, we visited the Bluetongue brewery and sampled some of their beers – something for Peter. The Bluetongue premium ale came up tops as did their Ginger beer which is a fab straight off the beach drink!

The next two days we got into the swing of things and visited McGuigans – not only wine but cheese tasting too – again something for Peter!, Harrigan’s, Tyrrells (where we had a great wine tour), Audrey Wilkinson (the first winery in the Hunter Valley), Lindemans / Rosemount, Pepper Tree, Petersons, Savannah, Scarborough, and Tinklers (excellent boutique winery). Of course we obliged and bought some wine too!

Whilst at Hunter we got to see some of Australia’s wildlife – Skippy and Lama’s, who look like baby camels!

Christmas in Sydney

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

With some family members landed, the consensus was to do Xmas the Ozzy way – beach and BBQ. Indeed the sun shone on Xmas day, so after opening prezzies we headed for the beach where at last Dan could try out his new boggie board.

20081225-151938  no - body board!!!  20081225-172626

Joined by Vinney and Tom, late afternoon we headed back to the unit to start proceedings. For our Xmas dinner we had a little bit of traditional dinner – Turkey, cranberry sauce and pigs in blankets which were done on the BBQ (even better!) as well as burgers and kangaroo (v nice!), accompanied by salad, cous cous and potato salad. Post dinner we played the famous Cyprus name game and drank til it was bed time!

Merry Christmas everyone!
