Second half

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

So, since getting back to Oz since half time in the UK we’ve managed to fit a fair bit in, including a trip to Melbourne, time on the beach and of course a birthday celebration for me!

20090913-121926The weather once we got back was amazing and we settled in for a long, long summer, had a couple of weekends on the beach, played plenty of golf and restarted midweek supper club! There are a serious number of restaurants just around our suburb so we have taken to task at getting around them and true to form we are progressing nicely!

20090926-202404Couple of weeks ago we headed to Melbourne for a long weekend. We left Sydney in beautiful 30 degree sunshine and turned up to a brisk 11 degrees Melbourne! The weekend was awesome, as usual plenty of top quality food, flowing wine and great times! It was AFL Grand Final weekend in Melbourne, given tickets were selling in excess of $1000 each we opted for a bar in St Kilda, the home suburb of one of the finalists! Unfortunately St Kilda didn’t win, but the atmosphere and fun were top notch!

Back to Sydney we have had a few weeks of rain which, given the recent dust storm, have been welcome by most so Karen will have to wait a couple of weeks for a return to the beach!  My birthday fell midweek so we opted for supper club on my actual birthday (probably one of the top three restaurant experiences to-date in Oz) and celebrations with all on the Sunday of a long weekend. The Sunday was then the turn of the rugby league grand final which resulted in a day long drinking accumulating in everyone back to ours! I don’t think the neighbours were too impressed given we were complaining the music wasn’t loud enough at 2am!!!after 11 hours of drinking back to ours!

Anyway, wedding plans are coming along nicely – stag & hen plans are in the air and the finer detail for the wedding being discussed.

Koh Racha Yai Island

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Since our last blog we have had c. 40 hours of travelling (non-stop), c. 36 hours of rain but more importantly c. 72 hours of thai hot weather! :-)

We left Yangshuo by a 1.5 hour bus to Guilin, where we then caught an overnight (soft!) sleeper to Shenzhen which is just over the mainland boarder to Hong Kong. From here we caught a train into HK, then a ferry over the waterway to HK central! At this point we wanted to go no further – we certainly have an affection for HK! Once we checked in, 10 hours before our flight (that’s early even by Karen’s standard!), at the in-town centre we had our boarding cards and our bags were on their way, supposedly along the longest conveyer belt in the world, to the airport. Without a thought of the bags Karen headed to Toni & Guy and I to Starbucks (having bought a UK-US travel plug!) to search for some accommodation on some Thai island somewhere near Phuket airport! Well, Karen’s hair took 4 hours and my search took 4 hours, 3 cappuccino’s and one frappuccino! My 4 hours researching paid off and we decided on a bit of Darren luxury (a little above our normal “flashpacker” status!) and opted for Ban Raya Resort!

Once Karen was back with blonde STRAIGHT hair we then had food and headed to the airport. I had already received an email from Ethiopian Air that our flight was delayed, and so it was. After a flight from HK -> Bangkok, then a flight from Bangkok -> Phuket, we then caught a bus to Chalong Bay for a longtail to Koh Racha, however…the skies where dark and rain was imminent. After convincing the longtail owner we would only pay an agreed amount, he summoned his son (wise choice is turns out) and we were off for a c. 1 hour crossing. After about 20 minutes I was soaked (with water dripping off my nose), Karen was soaked, the bags soaked and rain imminent – bugger!

20081029-122916  erm, raining?

Once we arrived at Koh Racha we were soon upon our accommodation and smiles returned to our face. The crossing in hindsight was quite amusing! So after almost 48 hours without accommodation we had arrived at our bungalow that had electricity only 18:00 – 08:00 and only a cold shower! Brilliant! No, truly, it was :-)

there's a resort up there somewhere!  our bungalow, #24!

For the remainder of that day and the next it basically rained. But upon the second morning the skies were blue and the suntan lotion was out! I had arranged to dive in the morning, so Karen took up position at the pool and I went diving – guess who I found? Nemo!!! The dive was great and I arranged for a second dive the following day. From this point forward we spent life like an islander, minimum of 12 hours sleep a night, great food (especially the seafood!) and cold beer :-)

Now we are travelling once again. We longtailed back in far superior weather, taxi’d to the airport and now have two flights ahead of us to Chiang Mai where we meet up once again with Adam & Cat and have already booked into Thai cookery school!

Hope you enjoy the pictures, sorry if they do not match those back home, but trust us that we are soaking up as much of this good weather as we can for one and all back home!

Kyoto

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

So the exact order of this post and the Hiroshima post are a little mixed. We arrived in Kyoto from Tokyo to make camp and explore Kyoto and surrounding areas from here – to make full use of our Japan rail pass. So we first had a couple of days in Kyoto, getting a feel for the place and then our trip to Hiroshima. When looking to book accommodation in Kyoto we left it late, so we could not get into our first choice and our second choice only had availability for our latter 4 nights – so we needed another hostel for nights 1 & 2. The first hostel was expensive & not the cleanest and the host would not stop talking. Even when checking out, and throwing him a line about us going to Hiroshima he told us that was not wise: “A day trip is enough” – we didn’t have the heart to tell him the truth! However, near to this first hostel we did “Onsen” again, though not as luxurious as Tokyo, it was good and we are both Onsen lovers!

Once back in Kyoto we had a day for temples. Now, Kyoto has approx. 1300 temples and a few hundred shrines in case the temples are overrun. We chose, from the book, two temples to go visit. The first it turned out was under scaffolding – typical and not cheap to get into. The gardens were spectacular though which made up somewhat. The second temple was more a collection of small temples which formed a huge complex. At neither temple did we see the temple we wanted, the one shown in the book! The afternoon plan was to go visit the ??? shrine which is essentially 4km of gates (some may have seen them in the film ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’). The sight & feel for the place was special and a delight to visit. Having identified the temple we wanted to see we set out – but time was against us and half way there we conceded defeat and instead went for dinner!

The next day was planned to capacity. We had an early start (8am!) to get to the Kinkaku-Ji Temple and it was worth the alarm clock. The temple was AWESOME. Pictures below.

From here we made our way to Nara for a day trip. Nara is home to the largest wooden building structure in the world and I was excited to see it. We decided to best spend our time in Nara we would following the walking tour (which passed said large building). We had read also in the book that Deer’s are plentiful in Nara as historically they were messengers from God in pre-Buddha times. Well, they are certainly revered and plentiful – they simply stroll around the streets/parks in the heart of Nara begging for food off young children!

Deer's love of ice cream...

Said large building was above all expectations. It was rebuilt late 1700’s to, apparently, 2/3’s the original size – OMG – it is massive enough today! Inside said shed (!) is as usual a large Buddha. Around the back of the Buddha is a hole in one of the support pillar’s which is said to be the same size as the Buddha’s nostril – and those that can pass through the hole are blessed. So there was a huge queue of people waiting to try. I tried to persuade Karen to try – but she wouldn’t – or was that here fear for trying?!

big house!!!

On the way back from Nara we made aquantances with two yanks on a day trip from Tokyo – the guy had survived eating Fogu the night before but was feeling ill that afternoon and definitely green – I hope he lives?!

Out last full day in Kyoto before a day of travelling form Kyoto -> Tokyo -> airport for Shanghai, we ventured to the coast, it was like a trip to Blackpool! Fortunately for us when we got there the sea was only a 40 meters away not 67 miles like at Blackpool AND the sun was shining! This second fact didn’t actually register with myself nor Karen and under the thin clouds we bathed – without cream, and yes you guessed it, BURNT! doh! Anyway, it would be a tan in a day or two! A day on the beach was very welcome, I finished Karen’s book (yes, Karen’s book – ‘Pride & Prejudice’) and then listened for hours to the iPod – awesome!

Yippee!   20081009-150808  20081009-154416

Next we return to China and briefly Shanghai – Part 1!
